09:00 – 10:30 Matthew Syed: Rebel Ideas – The Power of Diverse Thinking
Based on his bestselling book and Management Book of the Year 2020, Matthew will deliver a keynote about the power of ‘cognitive diversity’ – the ability to think differently about the world around us.
In the book Matthew explains how to harness our unique perspectives, pool our collective intelligence and tackle the greatest challenges of our age – from climate change to terrorism. It draws on a dazzling range of case studies, including the catastrophic failings of the CIA before 9/11, a fatal communication breakdown on top of Mount Everest and a moving tale of deradicalisation in America’s Deep South.
Rebel Ideas will strengthen any team or organisation, but has dozens of individual applications, too: from the art of reinvention to the remarkable benefits of personalised nutrition. It shows us how to become more creative, how to collaborate in a world becoming more interconnected, and how to break free of echo chambers that surround us all.

11:00 – 12:30 Workshop session: Cognitive Diversity by Matthew Syed Consulting
Use collective intelligence to improve team performance
Teams with diverse thinking – a variety of experiences, expertise, and perspectives – perform better when working on complex problems and tasks than teams without it. They have higher levels of collective intelligence, which enables them fill in individual blind spots, be more creative, and make better decisions. Despite the benefits of diverse thinking, all too often we inadvertently discourage diversity of thought in the way we design our teams, manage meetings, and how we interact with others. So, as leaders how can we improve team performance by making the most of diverse thinking?
14:00 – 15:30 Workshop session: Growth Mindset by Matthew Syed Consulting
The way we view the world – our mindset – can have a powerful influence on how we approach challenges as an individual and how we lead and develop our teams. When we approach things with a fixed mindset, we are more likely to stick with the status quo, and are far less likely to learn and evolve in the face of change. In contrast, when we approach things with a growth mindset, we embrace change, tackle challenges without fear of failure, learn from mistakes, and act as “learn it alls” rather than “know it alls”. By switching from a fixed to a growth mindset, we can materially improve individual, team and organisational performance.
We hope that you will like this new format of targeted workshop session!
We look forward to seeing all ALTO members at this programme-packed event in London. This event is not open to non-member organisations, thank you for your understanding.
